Job Summary

The Senior Business Data Analyst is responsible for working on initiatives supporting CN’s Smart Terminal Program through enabling data-driven decision making by creating and publishing actionable metrics and developing insights via data mining and analytics. The incumbent ensures successful preparation and adoption of new technologies, supports the timely execution of Smart Terminal Program activities and plays a key role in enabling technology transformation.Moreover, the incumbent develops a framework for data analytics within the Smart Terminal Program in order to provide business insights through the evaluation of traditional and non-traditional data.

Main Responsibilities Develop Dashboards and Reports

  • Develop dashboards, metrics, and reports to enable data-driven decision making
  • Publish and distribute reports through automated means
  • Ensure data quality and data integrity in published analytics
  • Work with Intermodal Operations to collect and develop business requirements
  • Present and explain results to Intermodal and Operations teams
  • Develop a deep understanding of available data sources quality and reporting
  • Organize database of test data and create trend analysis charts and metrics
  • Ensure data quality in key systems through audits, Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC)
  • Work with Information and Technology (I&T), Terminal Operating System as well as Telematics providers to ensure systems reporting accuracy
  • Assist in product functionality enhancement discussions through data driven understanding of current state and anticipated future state
  • Work with multiple departments to assess their needs for report scheduling and automation
  • Work with Robotic Process Automation (RPA) team to address report scheduling and other information update requirements

Business Data Analytics Framework

  • Evaluate business processes, and requirements, identify areas of improvement and develop solutions
  • Develop a framework for data analytics to provide business insights through the evaluation of traditional and non-traditional data
  • Oversee data processing efforts to ensure timely identification and correction of issues
  • Identify opportunities for process changes and tools to improve data quality and reporting
  • Effectively communicate analysis to key stakeholders and serve as a key liaison between stakeholders and users
  • Advance data structure requirements

Data Analytics and Modelling

  • Develop new business insights through data science and analytics
  • Work with external vendors and I&T counterparts to develop analytics capabilities with key systems and analytics tools
  • Support operations planning by providing key information necessary for developing high quality plan
  • Be compliant in handling and processing confidential company data as per guidelines

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work shifts and weekends when necessary. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and manage stress. The role requires occasional travel (15%) to various North American terminals.

Requirements Experience

Data Design and Analytics

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in data design and analytics

Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Business, or equivalent

Technical Skills/Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Subject Matter Expertise (SME) in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Based Solutions, and Data Science
  • Knowledge of railroad operations and railroad engineering
  • Knowledge of data analysis tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Business Objects, Systems, Applications and Products (SAP) Business Warehouse (BW), and R
