Calico Life Sciences

Data Scientist, Image Analysis

Job description

Who We Are

Calico (Calico Life Sciences LLC) is an Alphabet-founded research and development company whose mission is to harness advanced technologies and model systems to increase our understanding of the biology that controls human aging. Calico will use that knowledge to devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives. Calico’s highly innovative technology labs, its commitment to curiosity-driven discovery science, and, with academic and industry partners, its vibrant drug-development pipeline, together create an inspiring and exciting place to catalyze and enable medical breakthroughs.

Position Description

Calico seeks a data scientist with image analysis expertise.

This role exists within a small, cross-functional team, whose research focuses on the biology of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and connective tissue. The team combines in vivo, genetic, cell biology and data science techniques to study the decay of connective tissue and its impacts on broader biology. In this role, you will be accountable for the development and application of image analytics relevant to the team’s study of ECM form and function.

You will work with image data spanning multiple bioimaging paradigms, including: high-resolution microscopy; video footage of in vivo models; histology; and human clinical imaging (MRI, CT, DEXA, etc.). You will develop analytical techniques using both classical and machine-learning (ML) methods, and you will apply those methods to real data collected within Calico as well as from large, externally-generated human cohorts (e.g. the UK BioBank). The outputs of your analyses will serve as phenotypic endpoints for experimental and epidemiological studies.

In this role, you will be responsible for implementing innovative image analysis techniques to solve problems that are central to the group’s research objectives. You will also be responsible for applying your analytical methods to large-scale data sets. To accomplish both tasks, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with wider communities of ML and software engineers working at Calico.

Additional job activities will include the oral presentation of methods/results; write-up of methods/results for external publication; and the preparation of code for open-source distribution.

Position Requirements

  • An MS or PhD in either Computer Science or Biology, or related fields;
  • 2+ years experience applying computer science techniques to the analysis of biological or medical image data (may overlap with degree work);
  • A history of publication/code release that reflects the successful application of computational image analysis to scientific questions;
  • Direct experience training, evaluating & applying an ML model for image analysis;
  • Programming fluency in python;
  • Nice to have: experience with cloud computing on the Google Cloud Platform;
  • Must be willing to work onsite at least three days per week

The estimated base salary range for this role is $99,000 - $126,000. Actual pay will be based on a number of factors including experience and qualifications. This position is also eligible for two annual cash bonuses.
