Duties
If selected for this position as a Data Scientist, GS-1560-12/13 your duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Develops advanced methods, processes, algorithms, tools (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, Tableau) to extract meaningful data from structured and unstructured data, images, and other information sources to answer scientific questions.
- Develops and leads data science efforts that integrate technologies to gather and extract meaning from data.
- Contributes to and validates writing code in programming languages (e.g., R, Python) to create data visualizations, including interactive dashboards, charts, and graphs.
- Performs validation to ensure the data are FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable), traceable, and compatible with the organizational goals.
- Develops and provides instruction in the use of data science tools with a focus on R and Python.
- Serves as a subject matter expert in data science.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for a Data Scientist, GS-1560-12/13 position you must have:
A bachelor's degree, or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science, or a field that is directly related to the position
OR
A combination of education (at least 30 semester hours) and additional appropriate/related experience that is the equivalent to a major in mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or a field directly related to the position.
In Addition, In Order To Qualify For a Data Scientist, GS-1560 At The GS-12 Level You Must Have One Year Of Specialized Experience At Or Equivalent To The GS-11 Level In The Federal Service, Obtained In Either The Private Or Public Sector Performing The Following Types Of Tasks
- Performing data collection, preprocessing, and analysis by applying programming languages (e.g., R, Python), developing scripts and pipelines to automate data science workflows, analyzing large-scale datasets, including genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data, and utilizing data science expertise to support projects and provide recommendations for improvements to meet program objectives;
- Providing instruction in the use of data science tools with a focus on open-source tools using R and Python; AND
- Summarizing data analysis results using data visualization tools, programming languages, and software applications (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, or Tableau) to prepare presentations for scientific and non-scientific audiences and authored technical reports and research papers.
In Addition, In Order To Qualify For a Data Scientist, GS-1560 At The GS-13 Level You Must Have One Year Of Specialized Experience At Or Equivalent To The GS-12 Level In The Federal Service, Obtained In Either The Private Or Public Sector Performing The Following Types Of Tasks
- Performing, monitoring, and guiding the developing methods for data collection, preprocessing, and analysis by applying programming languages (e.g., R, Python), developing and revising scripts and pipelines to automate data science workflows, analyzing and interpreting large-scale datasets, including genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data, and utilizing data science expertise to develop, implement, and monitor projects and provide recommendations for improvements to meet program objectives;
- Developing and providing instruction in the use of data science tools with a focus on open-source tools using R and Python;
- Summarizing data analysis results and making recommendations for using different data visualization tools, programming languages, and software applications (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, or Tableau) to prepare presentations for scientific and non-scientific audiences and authored technical reports and research papers; AND
- Explaining data science concepts to stakeholders (e.g., researchers, leadership) to build consensus in planning data initiatives (e.g., data collection, preprocessing, analysis, reporting).

Additional Information
This position is eligible for non-local remote work, a position designation where little to no onsite presence is required (e.g., once or twice annually). You may work anywhere in the U.S., including any of the territories. Worksites outside of the U.S. are prohibited. Your pay is determined by the geographically defined pay locality applicable to your approved worksite (e.g., home residence).
