About The Team

Join AEMO’s Forecasting division, a team at the forefront of Australia’s energy future. We deliver essential data for major reports like the Electricity Statement of Opportunities, Gas Statement of Opportunities, and the Integrated System Plan. Our work involves forecasting electricity and gas demand, tracking the uptake of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as rooftop solar and electric vehicles, and providing analysis that guides critical decisions in the energy sector.

About The Role

As a Demand Forecasting Data Scientist, you'll develop medium to long-term forecasts (1 to 30 years) for Australia’s energy markets using advanced techniques like machine learning, predictive modeling, and time series analysis. You'll help shape the future of energy demand, including trends like electrification and demand flexibility. This role can be based in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Model Development: Design and test advanced forecasting models for gas and electricity demand, using techniques like machine learning and deep neural networks
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other teams on integrated modeling efforts, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of energy demand
  • Stakeholder Communication: Effectively communicate complex modeling approaches and results to both internal and external stakeholders through reports and presentations
  • Data Coordination: Manage data exchanges with strategic partners, contributing to a multi-sectoral framework for forecasting


What You Will Bring To The Role

  • Education: Advanced Degree: Typically, a master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Electrical Engineering, or a related field essential
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications in machine learning or data science (e.g., DataBricks Certified Machine Learning in Production) favourable
  • Experience: Strong background in forecasting, optimization, and time series analysis, especially within the energy sector
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in Python, R, SQL, PowerBI, and familiar with cloud technologies like Azure and DataBricks and visualisation tools, e.g. PowerBI
  • Industry Knowledge: Understanding of AEMO's role, energy sector developments, and the challenges of a transforming power system
