This role is based on-site in Redwood City (Redwood Shores), California

The Role

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Data Science, we are seeking an exceptional Proteomics Data Scientist who will work closely with our Customer Experience team, enhancing the customer experience. The driving focus of this team is to extract value and insights from large scale datasets produced by Seer-technology, to help our customers better understand and analyze their own data derived from the Seer platform.

Seer's new Proteomic Data Scientist will be empowered to perform exploratory data analysis, data wrangling, and statistical analysis to help our customers better understand and analyze their own data generated from Seer-technology and help them to uncover novel biological insights. The ideal candidate will have a track record of accomplishments applying data science methods to address biological problems in academia or in the life sciences/pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry.

Responsibilities & Goals

The Data Science group is focused on using modern data science tooling for processing and analyzing our proteomics molecular profiling data. Areas of specific responsibility and attention will include:
  • Perform exploratory data analysis, data wrangling, statistical analysis and modeling. Use appropriate and succinct methods, reproducible reporting, and visualizations to convey insights to the wider teams at Seer and to our customers
  • Serve as a data lead on customer projects, helping with study design and other data considerations for executing studies, monitoring and analyzing customer data as studies are run, analyzing complete study data and data report generation, and assisting with follow-up data-related questions and analysis once a study is complete
  • Effectively communicate proteomics and data-related topics to customers to help them better understand Seer technology and the data derived from it
  • Apply novel methods to internal and external data to demonstrate impact
  • Carefully curate generated data sets, optimizing for traceability and ease of access
  • Stay current with developments in data science and internally promote new techniques/ideas
  • Provide training and advice to scientists on optimal use of key data and analysis in computational mass spectrometry

Background & Qualifications
  • PhD in relevant discipline such as computer science, bioinformatics, molecular biology or biochemistry.
  • Minimum 5+ years experience in an academic or life-sciences industry laboratory setting
  • Superior Python or R skills in data analysis, statistics and data science methods. Comfortable in Jupyter/RStudio environments
  • Strong understanding of reproducible data analysis methods and best practices in software development.
  • Demonstrated understanding of algorithms and statistical methods in proteomics, genomics and/or genetics
  • Demonstrated understanding of MS-based proteomics algorithms, including peptide identification, PTM identification, protein inference as well as peptide/protein quantification.
  • Knowledge of established proteomics software pipelines, e.g. Skyline, OpenMS, MaxQuant, MSFragger and other proteomic computational tools
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated experience in cross-functional and timely communication
  • Strong and collaborative work ethic; must be a self-starter and persistent in achieving objectives to support Seer's scientific and business goals
  • Must work well in a small team setting, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively, while meeting scheduled deadlines in a fast-paced environment

At Seer, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $140,000 and $160,000, and will depend on the candidates education, skills, qualifications, experience, and location. This position is also eligible for bonus, benefits, and participation in Company's stock option plan.
