Senior Data Engineer/Architect

Join the Enterprise Data Office of a growing Education company. The Senior Data Engineer/Architect has a unique opportunity to help architect and build the next level enterprise data solution for a growing company as we move to the cloud and integrate and aggregate more systems and data sources. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, innovative, and curious about data. They will have proven technical experience and leadership architecting, building, and delivering useful data solutions. They will work with a variety of technical and business groups to obtain requirements and design solutions. They will show initiative by keeping current with best practices, offering ideas, and implementing improvements.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Acquire and load datasets for use by Enterprise Reporting and Analytics
  • Create and implement data models for analytics and reporting
  • Consult on data models for operational systems
  • Aggregate and summarize data for speed, consistency, and flexibility
  • Optimize data pulls, transformations, and loads
  • Ensure quality and consistency of data loaded
  • Profile data, ask questions, determine solutions
  • Collaborate and communicate within the team and across the organization
  • Present ideas and obtain feedback
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Essential Skills:

  • Data modeling experience with transactional and dimensional systems
  • Strong SQL development experience writing complex SQL queries, scripts, stored procedures, and ETL processes using SQL Server 2017+
  • Data acquisition and movement experience with standard and cloud based ETL tools (SSIS experience helpful)
  • Data profiling experience
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Design for scalability and extensibility
  • Experience using aggregation to support speed, consistency, and flexibility
  • Ensures confidentiality, integrity, and accessibility of data
  • Follows principled design producing consistently high-quality work in an efficient manner
  • Continuous improvement and delivery
  • Background with Higher Education data preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and digest information quickly
  • Meets deadlines consistently
  • Works quickly and efficiently
  • Displays initiative, good judgment, and a positive attitude
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Works well individually, in teams, and across teams

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or related field required
  • Extensive experience querying multiple data sources and platforms preferred, especially SQL Server
  • Familiarity with cloud ETL development and tools preferred
  • Strong hands-on experience developing multiple projects using on premise ETL (SSIS or similar tool) required
  • Advanced data architecture and data modeling experience preferred
  • Extensive data warehouse design and development experience preferred
  • Experience with Azure DevOps and Visual Studio preferred
  • Experience with Salesforce or other cloud applications preferred
  • Knowledgeable about BI tools and their use (Power BI, Tableau, etc.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Travel:

  • This employee’s work location is flexible with a blend of remote work and in-office work from the core office location in Charles Town, WV. Employee must have high speed internet connection and a dedicated work space.
